Phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. It is a condition of persistent, unrealistic, excessive fear of a particular person, situation, or object. Phobias are widespread, and their nature differs from person to person. Genetic & environmental factors can lead to the existence of dread in a person. People with incidents of trauma, substance abuse, or depression are also known to develop phobias and the treatment given through counselling is called Phobia counselling

Phobias & Types of Phobias

The term phobia is used extensively and in different situations. It highlights the number of various phobias that exist. But phobias exist in 3 main types (recognized by the American Psychiatric Association – APA)

Specific Phobia

It occurs in the presence of a specific person, object, or situation or anticipation.

Social Phobia (Social Anxiety)

Social phobia is the fear of facing humiliation or embarrassment in a public situation. People often avoid social situations, events, or places, where there are too many unknown people to interact with Public speaking, is one of the most common conditions that cause social phobia. It affects a person’s ability to be socially active and interact with other people. It also comes in the way of one’s interpersonal relationships.

Agoraphobia

It is the fear of being alone in situations or in a space where escape might be intricate. Phobia is experienced in places like a lift, public transport, and a crowded or open area. This fear can sometimes reach an extreme where a person might even avoid leaving their own house.
